SMC Snow Saw, Blue
Introducing the Summit Snow from Seattle Manufacturing Corporation (SMC). This has been one of ASK Tower Supply's best selling winter items for many years now. While seemingly simple, this snow saw is designed with precision and strength in mind. Every feature is well thought out to make the best of your winter adventures! The SMC Summit Snow Saw is crafted from aerospace-grade 7075 aluminum, our snow saw offers unbeatable strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. We've enhanced it with an ultra-lightweight (20 grams) protective 7 mil Polyester Sheath (do not throw this away, it's not cardboard), ensuring all your gear stays safe. Its ergonomic handle (as opposed to a traditional pistol grip snow saw) reduces fatigue for the user, and the hand-tuned, aggressive Stagger Tooth saw teeth guarantee efficient snow and ice clearing. Whether small or large ice/snow crystals the additional space between the stagger teeth allows for for efficient clearing during your cutting stroke. Designed for thrust cutting, it's the ultimate tool for mountaineering, alpine skiing, ski patrol, backcountry travel, and avalanche safety See the FAQ tab for specifics on why we think thrust cutting might be a better option for snow saws, as opposed to cutting on the draw portion of the stroke. This aluminum has been anodized bright blue to make sure your snow saw doesn't get left behind and is easy spot in all conditions.

The length listed in the product description of 20-3/4 inches is indeed the entire length of the snow saw from tip to tip. The length of the blade only (excluding the handle) is 15-3/8 inches.
Does the snow saw come with a sheath or any sort of protective cover?
Yes! The blade comes with a 7mil polyester sheath. It may appear like a thin "cardboard" material, but in fact is a polyester sheath that should not be discarded. This is great to protect other gear when the blade is stored next to it. It is also intentionally ultra lightweight to keep the total weight of the blade and sheath combined as minimal as possible.
Why do the teeth point away on the snow saw?
Many other snow saw saw's teeth point back towards the user so that the cutting actually happens on the draw stroke, which may be a bit more precise, but much less efficient and takes a lot longer to cut. The teeth on the Summit Snow Saw, however are specifically designed so that the cutting happens on the thrust stroke (like a traditional western wood saw). This has shown to be a more effective method in backcountry and mountaineering applications (especially if cutting snow blocks) giving the user a more efficient and faster cutting process in addition to better snow/ice clearing (which happens on the draw).
Additionally, if you are using this snow saw in heavy mountaineering applications, you likely want to conserve your pulling muscles as much as possible, so utilizing your stronger/larger chest and shoulder muscles (push muscles) for cutting in a more efficient use of energy on the mountain!
You will also notice on the top of the saw at the very tip there are actually a few small teeth pointing back towards the user, which helps with the initial plunge and first cut in snow/ice.
